The project's objective is to develop and evaluate Hepataug, a software solution designed for Augmented Reality (AR) guidance in monocular laparoscopic liver resection.
Hepataug enhances the surgeon's ability to visualize and localize internal, hidden liver anatomy by creating a virtual liver transparency during laparoscopic surgery. This is achieved by registering and overlaying a preoperative 3D model directly onto intraoperative video stream.
Key Surgical Challenge
Achieving robust AR in laparoscopy requires precise registration of a preoperative organ volume to intraoperative image feeds. This is particularly challenging for the liver because the preoperative volume lacks surface texture, while the liver deforms significantly and is only partially visible during surgery.
